Going into the service learning project I was pretty skeptical about the learning part. I knew that I would be doing a service to for the community but was not to sure about how much I was going to learn. During my service learning project I learned a lot of new information as well as incite into the social aspects of trying to educate the public. A majority of the people who walked through the HEC were unresponsive to the information that we were presenting. For the most part the people who stopped were people we knew and were curious to see what we were doing. If I did this project again, I would chose a more interesting subject and have a more interactive display so that we could get more people we didn’t know to get curious and come check it out. Learning how to more effectively engage and teach the public is an important skill I gained from this project. This is an important skill to learn because I plan on having a career in natural resource management and teaching the public about current issues is a part of that job. I also gained skills in teamwork during this project. In order for us to put a successful project together we had to make decisions about the information, poster size, design, layout etc. that satisfied the whole group.Learning about the digestive system and the common diseases for the different organs has helped me make wiser lifestyle choices. Eating a more balanced diet and cutting down on my alcohol consumption are two things that I have been doing and as a result my digestive system is healthier and I feel better than ever. Before this project I didn’t know why I got ailments like acid reflux and canker sores but now I know how to avoid getting them. The service learning project connected to a couple of my classes. The first was the lab portion of our class. When dissecting the rat, crayfish, etc. I was able to identify the different digestive organs because they were pretty similar to the human digestive system. It also connected to my health and wellness class because a big part of staying healthy is keeping your digestive system healthy and eating

Where Debot Goes #2
Our project on “Where Debot Goes” is coming along. Right now we are in the information gathering stages. I found an extremely helpful website that tells all about the human digestive system, all the parts, a detailed description of all of the parts and the problems that can go wrong with each part or problems patients have had. We are planning on for sure having a few informational posters to show the digestive system and maybe we will make a model to show a more 3-D view. We also plan on getting a hold of someone in the HEC so we can put our project on display. Soon we are going to get together to combine all of the information that we have found and then we will start working on the posters and the potential model. I really think I will learn a lot about some of the problems that you hear people have with their digestive system and overall it will be a good experience.
Dorm Sickness
Dorm sicknesses
Reasearch on our common dorm sicknesses is going ahead as planed. We have been able to narrow our search down to the more common sicknesses. There is alot of information and it is a little overwellming but we are making go progress. We have already started and are close to finishing our bathroom pamphlets but we are trying to think of ways to make the pamphlets alittle more exciting so people want to read them. One of the challenges that we have run across so far is trying to put the information we have collected into laymens terms so that people will understand the material. We are thinking of ways to make it a little more appealing to the eye aswell, which might include some pictures here and there. Other than a few bumps in the road everything is going well.

Where Debot Goes
For my service learning project I am working with Tyler Gagner and Ian Armstrong on “Where Debot Goes.” We are making a model of a human digestive system and then we are going to have a display set up in the HEC to tell about it. I am working on this project because most people don’t know what happens after they eat or even what they need to eat in order to feel better about themselves. I would plan on showing our display that we made to people in the HEC when they are going to and from lunch at Debot mostly. We would have some type of food/drink to give out to get people’s attention. I know that I will learn more about a human’s digestive system in this project and also hope to show other people on campus a little about the human digestive system too.

Common Dorm Sicknesses
Disease and sickness prevention
What I hope to get out of this project is the feeling of teaching other people and I want to learn myself.
